Scientific Metrology in the Field of National Measurement Standards is of primary importance for any state, since it is the prerequisite for the development of other branches of metrology as well as new technologies, and for the development of the society as a whole. The basic tasks of a national metrology institution - to which this field is entrusted throughout the world because of its not-for-profit performance - are: realisation and keeping of the national measurement standards and conducting of the necessary research and development tasks related to special measuring needs of individual sectors. The basic results of this work are especially: assurance of measuring traceability to the international level (up to the realization of units of measurement at the highest level of the BIPM laboratories within the Meter Convention in Paris), and knowledge transfer or expert assistance in performing the most sophisticated or important measurements for a wide range of users.

In the time of preparation for accession to the EU, when it was necessary to enforce more than 1000 European directives in various technical fields, appropriate performance of the national metrology institution was proven to be extremely important and crucial to the success of the entire project of technical harmonization.

In Slovenia, this field is covered by the Metrology Institute of the Republic of Slovenia (MIRS) as the national metrology institution, which in the field of several quantities of the International system of units (SI) co-operates with University of Ljubljana, University of Maribor and with several scientific-research and other institutions.
